The distance between Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam, where Perumbavoor is situated at a distance of less than 10 kilometers to the west and Kothamangalam to the east respectively, is 24 kilometers from the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, and only 50 kilometers from the Port of Kochi, the country's primary essential oil trading hub.

This station was established on March 15, 1951, under the Department of Industries of the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin Government under the name 'Lemongrass Breeding Station'. On August 1, 1954, it was renamed 'Lemongrass Research Station' and brought under the State Department of Agriculture. With the establishment of the Kerala Agricultural University in 1972, this station became a constituent research station of the university. In 1982, it was renamed the Aromatic and Medicinal Plants Research Station (AMPRS), and its research focus was diversified to include all tropical aromatic and medicinal plants. Research on essential oil-yielding plants is the primary activity of the center, alongside investigations into medicinal plants.
